He was born on 9 July 1986 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh to Yogendra Kumar and Bharti Taneja. His father Yogendra Kumar works at Bank of Baroda and his mother is a teacher by profession.
Taneja did his early schooling at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, whereas he did his graduation in B.Tech Civil Engineering in 2004 from the Indian Institue of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur).
Since his childhood, he has devoted himself to fitness and sports.
Later in 2011, he did his training at CAE Madrid which is a flight school in Madrid, Spain 2011.
In 2012 he started his career as an officer at IndiGo. In May 2019 Gaurav joined Air-Asia as captain in New Delhi.
On June 14, Taneja tweeted that he has been suspended by AirAsia India “for standing up for safe operations of an aircraft and its passengers”.
