Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, and television judge. Katy Perry was born on October 25, 1984. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music.

Katy Perry was born in Santa Barbara, California, to Pentecostal pastors Mary Christine and Maurice Husdon. From ages 3 to 11, Perry often moved across the country as her parents set up churches before settling again in Santa Barbara. Growing up she attended religious schools and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California during her elementary years.
Perry completed her General Educational Development requirements at the age of 15, during her first year of high school, and left Dos Pueblos High School to pursue a music career. In 2001 Patty released her debut studio album Katy Husdon which was commercially unsuccessful.
She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. After adopting the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records.
She signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007. Perry released her first single with Capitol, “ I Kissed A Girl”, on April 28, 2008. The track reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100.
