Rock Garden is also known as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden. It was built in the year 1957 by officer Nek Chand single-handedly in his spare time and has become a long-standing symbol of imagination and novelty in the city. He was a road inspector in the Engineer Department of Chandigarh Capital Project.
It is near Sukhna Lake and spreads over an area of 40 acres.
Rock Garden is most famous for its sculptures that have been made of scrap, recycled ceramic and other kinds of wastes (bottles, glasses, bangles, tiles, ceramic, electrical waste, etc.)
Things we throw away by thinking that it is useless, the creator of this garden gives inspiration to all use the discarded material in a unique way to make such beautiful things. There is a doll Museum inside Rock garden as a remark of the second death anniversary of the founder of the Rock garden Nek Chand. The museum contains more than 200 dolls made from waste clothes.
The Rock Garden of Chandigarh was started as a small activity in the 1950s, which now has hundreds of sculptures made from waste and discard materials. Millions of tourists from around the world visit this place every year. The Teej festival when the Rock Garden assumes a festive look holds major attractions for tourists.
HOW TO REACH
It is located in the north Chandigarh Sector 1 and is easily accessible from any part of the city. The city is well connected through all modes of transportation so one can hire a cab, auto, or local bus to reach this garden.
Chandigarh International Airport is the nearest airport to Rock Garden. One can also visit the Sukhna Lake which is just 2 kilometres away from the garden, which is also the major tourist attraction.
